PTTOC (Push to Talk Over Cellular) utilisation is on the rise among users as more people become aware of its advantages throughout wide-ranging settings.

Former Two Way Radio Communication

A complete Motorola Wave PTX solution was recently provided by the Radio Solutions team to a facilities management company to support staff communication. The customer is responsible for the security, cleaning, and management of a business estate in the Midlands.

Currently covering 100,000m2, the development is still expanding. With a number of industrial buildings, a sizable underground car park, as well as retail units and restaurants.

Before, they had no infrastructure and used conventional two-way radios (RF). This didn't have the coverage necessary to allow communication across the entire estate. This presented a challenge for the employees since the control room was located at an underground level in the car park. When speaking with the control room, they frequently ran into connection problems.

Staff began searching for an alternative solution since even though the radios' features met all requirements, their coverage fell short. Since the site's owner didn't want antennas mounted to the buildings, additional infrastructure wasn't an option in this scenario.

Results from the initial survey indicated that one repeater would not provide access to the whole site coverage. Again, getting coverage in the control room was proving to be challenging. If they had continued to use traditional two-way radios, numerous repeaters would have been necessary, which would have come at a high initial cost for the system.

Exploring PTTOC Technology

After that, we began discussing the site's PTTOC possibilities. PTTOC, also referred to as 4G radios, uses Wi-Fi or cellular networks to communicate. Users will therefore be able to converse everywhere there is a connection.

Even though there were several platforms to choose from, the customer chose the Motorola Wave PTX because, like Radio Solutions, they were loyal to the Motorola brand.

To provide complete estate coverage as the estate grows, a hybrid solution that combines an LTE solution and RF radio infrastructure may be necessary and the future.
Motorola has a superb bridged solution that connects the platforms with this in mind, allowing for some future planning.

The devices were set up to operate on both LTE and WIFI for testing purposes throughout the estate. Even in the control room, which benefited from secure WIFI access, the coverage acquired as a result was excellent.

A multi-network roaming SIM card is used by the Motorola Wave PTX, allowing it to automatically connect to the best network available.

Adding to the Fleet

The users were delighted with the coverage and functionality, not to mention the slimline profile of the Motorola TLK100 devices. We quickly moved to a full rollout of Motorola Wave PTX across the estate. We recently included the brand-new Motorola TLK110 handset in the estate's second phase rollout.
