Portishead Volunteer Police Cadets contacted Radio Solutions to upgrade its two-way radios in preparation for a number of key community events.

Purchasing five quad packs of Motorola T82s with accessories, Portishead Volunteer Police Cadet Leader Kirstie Mayes explained how they will be utilised for events such as the North Somerset Agricultural Show, the Nailsea and Backwell Cider Fest and the WSM Air Show. “These events require us to be in communication with the cadets in case they have a problem or to update them of anything they need to know, for example descriptions of missing children.”

The Portishead cadets are one of ten cadet units across Avon and Somerset Constabulary, and deliver an educational and informative programme of activities for young people aged 14-17.

“This enables them to learn about and become ambassadors for the police in their communities, to gain new skills and qualifications, enhance inter-personal skills and confidence, and achieve a sense of pride,” said Ms Mayes.

“We believe that the skills and experiences cadets gain through volunteering with us will enhance their opportunities for further education, employment and training.”

Ms Mayes described how previously the organisation had the same model of radios from when the unit started 5 years ago. “However, the batteries started to get tired and they didn’t really have the range required for some of our events.

“With thanks to the local Nailsea and Backwell Rugby club we managed to get some sponsorship to upgrade and improve the radios we had so we can continue to take them on events,” she said. With events planned for the forthcoming year, the cadets have not yet had the chance to use the two-way radios to their full potential. “So far the quality seems a lot better than our older ones and I’m sure the different batteries are going to make a large difference,” finished Ms Mayes.
