Hawarden Golf Club has been welcoming golfers to its stunning 18-hole parkland course in Flintshire, North Wales since 1911. Stretching across 5,857 yards of rolling fairways and set within the historic Gladstone Estate, it's a course that demands as much from its staff as it does from its players.

The Challenge

Managing a golf course of this size comes with an obvious problem — mobile signal. Across 18 holes of open parkland, reliable phone coverage simply doesn't exist. For Course Manager Thomas Ison and his team, that meant frustrating communication blackspots, delays in coordinating staff, and no reliable way to stay in contact across the site.

The solution was straightforward: two-way radios.

The Solution

In February 2026, Hawarden Golf Club ordered a six-pack of Motorola XT185 walkie talkies from Radio Solutions, with same-day despatch. The XT185 is a licence-free PMR446 radio — no Ofcom licence required, no programming needed, ready to use straight out of the box.
For a busy golf course managing greenkeeping, marshalling, and day-to-day operations across a large site, it's a practical and cost-effective solution that doesn't require any technical setup.

The Result

Thomas and his team haven't looked back. In his own words:

"Myself and the staff can't fault the radios — we get signal wall-to-wall all around the course. Communication and job planning is a lot easier now, being able to get hold of any member of staff at the click of a button."

Before purchasing, Thomas did his research online and spoke to the Radio Solutions team by phone. He rated both the radios and his overall experience 5 out of 5.

"The information I was able to read and the information I received over the phone was fantastic — this is the reason I went ahead with the purchase."

Ready to Get Your Team Connected?

If your site has poor mobile coverage, two-way radios are the most reliable solution.

Range will vary for licence free equipment depending on the environment — open parkland like a golf course offers ideal conditions for maximum coverage, but obstacles such as trees, buildings, and changes in elevation will affect performance.

If you’re not sure if radios will work on your site, we offer a demo service so you can test before you commit.
