Chemco International Ltd is a leading manufacturer operating across two neighbouring sites. With a production process that is hands-on and physically demanding, the business relies on fast, reliable communication between teams, drivers, and on-site medics. Recognising limitations with their previous setup, Chemco decided it was time to upgrade.

Identifying Areas for Improvement

Chemco’s operations span two closely situated facilities, requiring constant communication between them. From routine updates to urgent responses, radio communication has long played a crucial role in keeping their teams connected.

One key challenge was the lack of coverage from their previous radios, particularly when their van driver moved between sites or when immediate medical attention was required. The inability to reliably alert all radios during emergencies, despite having a dedicated emergency call button, raised serious concerns. Coupled with equipment that had become worn and dirty due to the nature of their manufacturing environment, it was clear a more robust, dependable solution was needed.

Previous Forms of Communication

The team had been using Motorola T82 radios. While functional, these radios began to fall short due to wear-and-tear. The need was clear for a more durable, reliable, and user-friendly communication solution that could withstand daily use and ensure teams were always within reach.

Trialling a New Solution

Chemco opted for a Motorola solution once again, this time selecting the XT420. Designed for tough working environments and offering stronger performance over short distances, the XT420s were a natural upgrade.

One of the standout advantages was the improved audio clarity and rugged build, ideal for Chemco’s factory conditions. The radios also provided dependable coverage between sites, allowing van drivers to stay connected and medical staff to be reached when needed.

“Our day-to-day use of the radios is for communication between our two sites and with our van driver as he travels between them,” said Paul McCormack, Operations Technician at Chemco International. “We also rely on them to contact site medics when needed. The XT420s have really helped with that.”

Smooth Purchasing Experience

Paul described the buying experience as straightforward and easy. While there was a small hiccup regarding protective covers being incompatible with the new radios, the returns process was handled smoothly, with no issues.

“The whole buying process was very easy,” he added. “Even the small issue with the covers was quickly resolved, which made things much simpler on our end.”

A Good Investment for the Long-Term

The Motorola XT420 radios have enhanced day-to-day operations at Chemco International, providing clear, consistent communication across both sites. The reliability and build quality of the XT420 has made it a worthwhile upgrade, ensuring safety, efficiency, and peace of mind for everyone on the ground.
